The Issue

I have struggled for many years with getting off to sleep and in recent years melatonin has been a game changer for me.  I also know many children who are on the autism spectrum and also struggle with irregular sleep patterns.  I know that their parents juggle multiple additional responsibilities daily, and ensuring their children get a good night's sleep is of utmost importance. Low dosage melatonin supplements have been a helpful aid for many families however, getting them here in Ireland is a costly affair due to their classification as a medicine or drug,  yet these supplements are affordable and easily accessible over the counter in countries like the USA.

There is evidence that low dosage melatonin is beneficial for those with sleep disorders, including children and adults with ASD and ADHD. Numerous studies back its efficacy and safety at low doses, making it an ideal, non-invasive solution for many families. According to research published in the 'Journal of Pineal Research', melatonin significantly reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and improves sleep quality without severe side effects when used correctly.

Currently, the classification of melatonin as a medicine significantly raises its cost and licensing fees, making it almost prohibitive for local pharmacies to carry. These licensing fees are resulting in prices that are exorbitant compared to other countries, and not to mention the cost of a GP visit for the prescription.  By reclassifying low dosage melatonin as an over-the-counter supplement, we can improve access for families who need it without causing undue financial strain.

Moreover, this reclassification could benefit countless others who struggle quietly, resorting to costly and less effective alternatives. It's important to recognize that regular access to affordable melatonin supplements could significantly improve the quality of life for many.

I urge the Irish government and health authorities to reconsider the current classification of melatonin. Let us pave the way for responsible access for those who need this vital supplement. Please sign this petition to support the reclassification of low dosage melatonin as an over-the-counter supplement for easier and more affordable access.
