Declare Sunday, September 17, 2023, as a Disaster Due to Flooding.

The Issue

Dear Governor Pritzker,

We, the undersigned residents of Calumet City and concerned citizens of Illinois, are writing to bring to your attention the severe flooding that occurred in our community on Sunday, September 17, 2023. We urge you to declare this day as a disaster due to flooding, given the immense damage, loss, and hardships experienced by our residents.

On that fateful day, Calumet City and the surrounding areas received an unprecedented 9.5 to 11 inches of rain within a mere two-hour time frame. This extreme weather event caused havoc, resulting in the destruction of homes, the loss of personal belongings, and many vehicles being totaled. Families have been left homeless, traumatized, and financially burdened.

Furthermore, we are deeply concerned that the delayed declaration of a disaster has prevented our community from accessing much-needed FEMA assistance. The impacts of this flooding extend beyond the immediate destruction, affecting residents' ability to restore their lives and rebuild their homes.

Governor Pritzker, it is crucial to expedite the declaration of Sunday, September 17, 2023, as a disaster due to flooding. Such a declaration will not only provide the necessary resources but also send a strong message of support to the affected residents of Calumet City, Illinois.
