The Issue

Care leavers across the globe face numerous challenges, often battling social disconnection, homelessness, unemployment, stigma, and limited access to essential services. While certain countries might observe their own National Care Leavers Weeks, there exists no globally recognized day dedicated to acknowledging their resilience, unique needs, and invaluable contributions.

The 11th of December marks a significant date for care leavers worldwide. In 2020, on this day, care leavers from 11 different countries united to directly voice their concerns and aspirations to policymakers. This date symbolizes not just unity but the power of collective voices striving for recognition and change. We propose that this date becomes an annual, globally acknowledged International Care Leavers Day.

Such a day would serve far beyond mere acknowledgment. It would be a beacon of advocacy, raising global awareness about the challenges care leavers face and pushing for systemic changes to better support their integration and success in society. By dedicating this day, we can facilitate the breaking down of stigma and promote a deeper understanding and better opportunities for care leavers worldwide.

With the endorsement of a respected global body like the United Nations, International Care Leavers Day would provide a significant platform, encouraging collaborative efforts among nations to address the gaps and challenges within the care system. This initiative would not only empower care leavers by giving them the recognition they deserve but also mobilize the support necessary to positively change their lives.

Join us in advocating for this necessary change. We call upon the United Nations to lead by officially declaring the 11th of December as International Care Leavers Day. Let's work together to ensure that care leavers, who have overcome so many odds, receive the acknowledgement and support they so richly deserve.
