Declare April as Assyrian Heritage Month in Ontario

Declare April as Assyrian Heritage Month in Ontario
The Issue
Ontario is home to a vibrant and growing Assyrian community that has significantly contributed to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the province. Despite these contributions, there is currently no official recognition or celebration of the Assyrian heritage within Ontario's calendar. Declaring April as "Assyrian Heritage Month" would not only provide the recognition the Assyrian community deserves but also offer an opportunity to educate Ontarians about Assyrian culture, history, and contributions.
The Assyrian civilization is one of the world's oldest, with a history spanning over 6,000 years and originating from the ancient Assyrian Empire. Today, Assyrians continue to preserve their rich heritage through language, art, music, and traditional customs, making them an integral part of Ontario's multicultural tapestry. Yet, Assyrians often face challenges in maintaining their cultural identity in the diaspora. Establishing April as Assyrian Heritage Month would foster a greater understanding and appreciation for Assyrian culture among all Ontarians.
Across Canada and the world, heritage months dedicated to celebrating the histories and contributions of various ethnic groups have proven successful in building bridges between cultures. Similar recognition for the Assyrian community would inspire cultural exchanges and enrich Ontario's diverse society.
Let's take this step to honor the Assyrian community's legacy and ensure their stories and achievements are acknowledged and celebrated throughout Ontario. We call on the Ontario Provincial Government to officially declare April as "Assyrian Heritage Month."
