The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report has issued a final warning to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, we must act now to avoid a climate catastrophe.
Despite this dire warning, the Australian Government has over 100 new coal and gas projects in development. Over 100 Australian scientists and environmental groups have signed an open letter urging the government to halt any additional fossil fuel projects in the country.
Currently, the Australian Parliament is discussing the 'Safeguard Mechanism' legislation and regulations, designed to curb emissions from major polluting industries.
As it stands, the legislation permits new fossil fuel projects and allows existing polluters unlimited access to offsets, enabling increased emissions.
Labor is negotiating amendments with the Greens and independents that could hold large Australian polluters accountable. Please join me in urging Parliament to bolster the Safeguard Mechanism.
