Climate warriors - we need to start a movement.

Today, can you do two things?

1.  Share this petition and get at least one person to sign

2.  Start a petition to your local council using the template supplied.  It takes only 5 minutes but could have a very big impact.

We have this national petition to the PM Scott Morrison asking for the federal government to declare a climate emergency.  This is approaching 70,000 signatures.

We are now going to ask all of you to petition your local councils, asking them also to declare a climate emergency.

These petitions will be linked to the national petition on a Change.org movement page.  There is a template for you to use.

What does a climate emergency mean?

It is a symbolic gesture and can mean many things in different areas.  It does however have common themes which can include the following.

1.  Acknowledging that the current situation is a crisis and requires immediate action

2.  A commitment to drastically cutting emissions by taking up practical measures such as switching to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency of buildings, supporting local and plant based diets, choosing public transport, or hybrid or electric vehicles where possible and supporting new infrastructure which allows these changes to happen.

3.  A commitment to sustainable environmental practices - moving away from plastic and single use items, reduction of water and paper waste, sustainable building materials, protection of natural habitats including the ocean.

4. Planning for a post-coal world.  A commitment to new jobs in the renewable energy industry, and transition planning for coal workers to ensure job security.
