This week the Democratic National Committee, headed by Debbie Wasserman Schultz, declared war on the grassroots of the Democratic Party and openly admitted that superdelegates exist solely to protect establishment interests. In 2008, then presidential candidate Barack Obama introduced restrictions on the DNC which banned donations from federal lobbyists and political action committees, or PACs. These restrictions were intended to make sure that the interests of ordinary voters did not have to compete with special interests. This week, the DNC rolled back these restrictions, ensuring that special interests and a handful of disgustingly wealthy individuals will control the Democratic Party going forward, not the people. This move is merely one of many on the part of the DNC which indicate that it truly has no interest in listening to its members, but rather prefers to line its pockets with unaccountable, dark money. It also shows that the DNC is taking full advantage of Citizens United and now views corporations and PACs as people worthy of more attention than average voters. As if this assault on our democracy wasn’t enough, Debbie Wasserman Schultz added insult to injury by openly admitting that unpledged delegates, or superdelegates, exist “to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists.” It’s difficult to believe that the chairwoman would be so open and frank about the fact that superdelegates are designed to disenfranchise voters, but this year’s election has proved that provocative statements are no longer damning statements in American politics. As chairwoman of the Democratic Party, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has shown time and again that her priorities are not to govern by the ideals of the Democratic Party, but rather to gouge the party with cash from the political and economic establishment, particularly the Clinton machine. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Democratic establishment think that they are immune to the desires of the grassroots of the Democratic Party, and it’s time for us, the people of the Democratic Party, to show them how horribly wrong they truly are. If you haven’t already, please share our petition demanding Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s immediate resignation to show the DNC that the people are indeed paying attention, and we are fed up with their antics.
