ACTION: Vote for our next campaign: https://weareunitedcitizens.org/uncategorized/briefing-united-citizens-first-vote-for-first-campaign/
Last year we called on Tim Cook to investigate whether Apple products used child labour to produce its products. Here's the latest update:
According to this article by Leander Kahney (editor and publisher of Cult of Mac), "the majority of Apple’s suppliers have been brought into compliance. Fewer than a quarter hit that mark just four years ago. Of course, this is all self-reported, so we have to take Apple’s word for it. Apple does, however, work with dozens of third-party groups and organizations, so there is some oversight. And really big reforms — like allowing workers to unionize — seem a long way away."
Amnesty International also recently said, "There has been some progress since 2016. In response to Amnesty’s research several leading companies, including Apple... have published data about their supply chains".
We await further research and investigation by organisations who are leading the inquiries.
But, in the meantime, what can you do to help going forward?
It's simple: VOTE FOR OUR NEXT CAMPAIGN.
Our new membership organisation, United Citizens, is now voting for our next campaign to shape tech for all, leaving nobody behind.
These are the most pressing issues:
> Democratic accountability of tech leaders
> Disinformation and fake news
> Poor conditions of digital-age workers
> Data exploitation
> Lethal automated weapons
Which issue do you want us to campaign on first? Do you think we should still focus on poor conditions of digital-age workers, or should we focus on another issue? Join United Citizens as a member to have your say.
Deadline: Voting ends at 23:59 on Sunday 31st March 2019.
Briefing for vote and general information: https://weareunitedcitizens.org/uncategorized/briefing-united-citizens-first-vote-for-first-campaign/.
There are still ongoing pressing problems caused by tech, and it is our hope that you join us in the continued fight to shape the fourth industrial revolution for all, leaving nobody behind. We believe in global democracy, and we live this by giving you the power to vote to shape our agenda.
Let's do this.
