I am an actor, a part of the vibrant community that has been contributing to the entertainment industry since Charlie Chaplin first set foot on American soil. We have built careers, homes, and families through our work. Our performances are not just jobs; they are extensions of who we are. Yet today, our work and identities face an imminent threat from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generated Artificial Intelligence. (Chad’s nose, my eyes and smile, Lisa’s arms)

Under the current agreement studios have the right to use our images with our consent. However, we've been informed that soon our images could be used without such consent. This threatens not only established actors but also future artists who aspire to make their mark in this industry. We strive to be part of a community that MIGHT decline work based on our desire to not become data. 

Our faces and performances build careers; they define Oscar winners and struggling artists alike. They should not be commoditized without proper safeguards or replaced by AI impersonations against our will.

According to a study by USC's Entertainment Technology Center (2019), there is an increasing trend towards using AI for creating digital humans in movies - a development that could potentially replace human actors if left unchecked. 

We want progress but not at the cost of losing ourselves or being replaced entirely by technology. We demand changes in the contract ensuring protection against a use of actor's image by AI and reassurance that human creativity will always hold its place alongside technological advancements in entertainment.

ACTORS are a creative community. Sag Aftra is not a monolith. We develop help computer software. We participate in the creation of blockbuster films as well as student films. Sometimes we work for free because this is our purpose. To entertain and delight! I never thought I would have a place in this industry. I see my chances dwindling right before my eyes. I know I’m talented. I know WE ARE strong. And I know I can’t do this without you. YES, you too, can make a difference. Sag Aftra members please let the negotiating committee and the national board of our union KNOW the artificial intelligence wording and the explanations given regarding reuse without consent is not the future of the industry.
