Dear Meta, we want to use a web browser of OUR choosing

The Issue

PROBLEM

As you may have noticed, some time ago Meta (the organization behind Facebook, Instagram and other popular platforms) decided to remove the option for us to open links from their app in an EXTERNAL web browser of OUR choosing by default. Instead Meta is FORCING us to use their in-app browser.

Kind of a membrum virile move.

As much as it's annoying to click "Open in external browser" every time you tap on a link, it's also a very valid privacy concern.

MISSION

What this campaign aims to accomplish, is to either make them give us back the option to open links in an EXTERNAL web browser on ALL of their platforms by default, or better yet - disable their in-app browser altogether.

STATEMENT

We don't want your cheap, inferior, sub-par, junky, trashy, useless, worthless, icky, lousy, rotten, stinking in-app browser, Meta!

PLAN

The plan for now is to just set things in motion and see how it goes. I'll try and kick-start the campaign with my own money by advertising it on their own platforms, which should help a bit.

What you can do right now is send a message directly to Meta about this. Here's how:

Here's what the message might look like, you can just copy-paste it or you can write your own:

Hi! I want an option to open all links from your platforms in an external web browser. I don't want to use your in-app browser at all. Thanks!

Another thing you can do is share this with your family and friends. Tell them to sign the petition and follow the Facebook page!

PLAN B

If this particular effort doesn't not succeed, I'm sure that some privacy-concerned agencies in the US and EU will be very interested in investigating a possible personal data misuse case.
