Boca Save our Beaches

The Issue

We have two developments, coming soon to a Boca beach near you: 2500 and 2600 N. Ocean Blvd. BOTH LOTS DEEMED UNBUILDABLE.

The property owners of 2500 and 2600 N Ocean Blvd in Boca Raton continue to seek building permits to construct two four-story structures on the beach. Our City’s CCCL Setback Ordinance (City Code Section 28-1556) prohibits this because these properties lie seaward (east) of the Coastal Construction Control Line (CCCL).  In order to commence construction, a Variance must be provided by City Council. This specific CCCL Variance, if granted, would give property owners permission to build on untouched beach dunes of Boca Raton.

2600 N. Ocean Blvd. introduces a "one of a kind oceanfront setting surrounded by nature preservation areas." This four-story duplex will feature over 14,000 square feet of destruction to our dune environment including 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms along with an 8 car garage and a car elevator. Proposed at four stories with over 11,000 square feet, a terrace, pool and .32 acres of landscaping, 2500 N. Ocean poses an immediate threat to our beaches. Construction will cause the removal of sand dunes, sea grape trees and wildlife. 2500 N Ocean was previously denied twice by the Zoning Board of Adjustment. However, the City Council of Boca Raton reversed the Zoning Board's decision and variances were granted to the property owner in order to pursue development.

The City Council Members of Boca Raton have failed to ensure long term protection and resiliency of our community's beach and dune environment. The fate of Boca Raton's marine ecosystem is at stake, and wildlife species dependent on beach and dune habitats will decline due the City Council's actions. Once our beaches are gone, we cannot get them back.

Only your voice and involvement can untwist our local city government, preserve the intent of previous City Councils and save our beaches.
