The Davis District School Board has decided to send students back full time (excluding Fridays). This starts September 28th for elementary school and October 5th for secondary schools. This unanimous vote puts both students and teachers in danger. As a high school student I have seen people my age suffer serious COVID—19 symptoms despite the common belief that our age group is safe. I am almost positive my school will experience an outbreak and I know that this decision will hurt both students and staff. Teachers are already at high risk, and there will be virtually no way to ensure social distancing (especially as on the hybrid schedule that is already a struggle). Doing this ensures that we will go online full time again. Please understand the fear I and many of my peers feel in this situation. With half the students every other day, teachers are already struggling to follow strict COVID guidelines, and I’m sure if we all go back full time this will become near impossible. Many teachers at my school are high risk, but have no choice but to continue teaching. I and so many other students are so appreciative of our teachers efforts and I can’t imagine how hard this is going to be. As students we deserve a say in our health, we aren’t just COVID-19 guinea pigs.
