Hi everyone,
Very happy to say that yesterday was a big day full of major developments for the campaign to free the Quewezance sisters. Firstly, I am overjoyed to share that Federal Justice Minister David Lametti’s office confirmed to the sister’s legal team that there may have been a miscarriage of justice in their case, which is now officially under investigation.
This means that sisters will be free provisionally, while this review is happening.
You can read more about this development in this APTN article, and see a short video of Odelia sharing the exciting news with her daughter on the phone here.
Also yesterday, I joined Odelia (pictured), Senator Kim Pate, the sisters' lawyer James Lockyer and other high-profile supporters for a press conference in Ottawa to discuss the case. There, I had the opportunity to talk about the petition, sending the clear message that over 43,000 people have joined me in standing with the sisters. Your signatures filled 800 pages.
You can watch the full news conference here.
When Odelia was asked about what she plans to do when she is free, she said “I want to help women who are in prison. I want to be an advocate and have a voice. I would like to be like David Milgaard, and help people in my situation.”
Thank YOU again for offering your support in ending their wrongful conviction. Every one of your calls, tweets, emails has helped us get here. We are so close but this is not over, help us share the sister’s story and ensure that soon their convictions will be overturned, and they will finally be fully free.
