University of Memphis Trades Beloved Garden for a Parking Lot

University of Memphis Trades Beloved Garden for a Parking Lot
The Issue
The University of Memphis administration has decided to move the Urban Community Garden on campus to add 120 parking spaces behind the priority parking lot on Zach Curlin. These new parking spaces would be located behind a priority parking lot and would be marginally available to the general population. Priority parking on campus costs $95/semester for students, with the construction of this project possibly increasing tuition costs. In addition, this is in blatant disregard for the students’ concerns set forth in the University of Memphis Green Fee policy whereby students pay a $10 Green Fee as a part of their tuition intended to support sustainable projects. Removing such green spaces in exchange for environmentally harmful and unwarranted slabs of concrete may increase the university’s revenue, meanwhile potentially forsaking students sustainability concerns.
