Make Coding a second language in elementary, middle, and high schools.
The Issue
Hello everyone,
I am in the tech field within the United States. Cyberliteracy is extremely important to me. It is my goal to improve the literacy of all those around me. I think one way that literacy is achieved is through long term, early exposure to coding languages and computational design.
Here is a quote from fluentu.com...
"English is the language of business and communication worldwide. English is the most widespread spoken and written language in the world. An estimated 1500 million people speak the language worldwide, out of which only 375 million are native speakers. Over 1 billion people speak it as a foreign language."
This outlook is what continues to drive our need to teach English from the first day of school to the last day of high school. If we accept the future for what it is, then this outlook should spur us to see coding as a language that must be taught from the first day of school to the last day of high school.
From fastcompany.com...
"Seven million job openings in 2015 were in occupations that required coding skills, and programming jobs overall are growing 12% faster than the market average.
However, a new report from Burning Glass, a job market analytics firm, found that there were as many as 7 million job openings in 2015 in occupations that required coding skills. They also found that programming jobs overall are growing 12% faster than the market average."
This trend is a direct call for us to bring coding and programming to our schools. The potential model would start off with small coding languages, such as Snatch, combined with computational design and steadily progress to the significant coding languages (Python, Java, C++). We can do this.
Let's be great for our children and for our country!
