Thanks to your help, we have over 1300 signatures in support of saving the cherry trees on Warfield Place, for the benefit of all Northampton residents.

Professor Oliver Kellhammer has documented the importance of these shade canopy trees by measuring the ground temperature on the asphalt sidewalk near and under the cherry trees. On June 28 at 1:00 PM, when the air temperature was 96℉, the ground temperature under the shade of the trees was  85℉. The ground temperature in the sun was 139℉, a variance of 54℉. This is hot enough to cause second-degree burns. Destroying this tree canopy will endanger children, the elderly, people with impaired mobility, and those who use service animals.

We have pleaded with the city to press pause on this hasty, hugely unpopular plan and consider other alternatives. They have refused. So we keep fighting. The bulldozers are coming in a week or two--they won’t give us a date. We need to be ready to mobilize. We still need your help.
