Remove UK Censorship of Video On Demand Pornography (AMSR 2014)

The new legislation that bans many consensual acts (which everyday people enjoy during sex) in our video on demand pornography is pure censorship. It is offensive to feminists, to those who engage in a BDSM lifestyle and to every single person who previously had the right to enjoy their sexual preferences without judgement from others, including the government. That's right, it offends YOU.

As of 01/12/2014, The Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014 requires that video-on-demand (VoD) online porn now adhere to the same guidelines laid out for DVD sex shop-type porn by the British Board of Film Censors (BBFC). This includes the banning of spanking, caning, aggressive whipping, penetration by any object “associated with violence”, physical or verbal abuse (regardless of if consensual), urolagnia (known as “water sports”), female ejaculation, strangulation, facesitting and fisting, the last three being listed by the British Board of Film Censors (BBFC) as potentially “life-endangering”.

Our government constantly declares itself tolerant and non judgemental, yet here it passes judgement on people for what they find consensually pleasurable to watch and even take part in. This is one step down a very slippery slope. Now that we have banned acts such as spanking in our pornography, one can only ask what is next? Will they ban BDSM erotica? Will they ban the sale of BDSM accessories such as paddles and whips? Will they eventually ban people from actually doing these things? This legislation makes no distinction between consensual and non-consensual practices, and demonises normal, non harmful and consensual fantasies, preferences and acts that even the most respectable people might take pleasure from (as is their right as long as those acts are consensual).

The banning of female ejaculation in pornography is especially offensive and damaging to our society, which now appears to be going backwards. This oppresses women and implies that pornography once more should only show male pleasure, and not female, and objectifies women. Women are not just pretty objects created for male pleasure. Some women DO naturally ejaculate; this is a scientifically proven fact. Some women enjoy it. It is a perfectly natural thing to experience or fantasize about, as is every other act on that list. Why shouldn't our pornography depict real experiences which DO happen during sex? Why should our pornography be censored and only give a shallow, incorrect view that sex is only about male pleasure and that basic, non BDSM or taboo sex is the only acceptable way of achieving sexual pleasure.

Our modern, accepting society should by now understand that as long as an act is consensual by all parties, it should be more than acceptable.

This censoring of pornography is not only oppressive towards women but also towards those who enjoy the BDSM lifestyle. Many of the acts listed, such as spanking and caning, are included heavily in real life BDSM scenes between lovers. Why shouldn't they be depicted in pornography where the stars are consenting, and so is the viewer? Why censor them? Consensual spanking is not dangerous, or the product of an unhealthy relationship, so why censor them? Could it be that the government want to control us right down to our sexual desires and pleasures?

Furthermore, suggesting that face-sitting and fisting are “life-threatening” is pure lunacy and scaremongering. I'm sure that fisting IS dangerous, if done by the inexperienced and over-zealous, but certainly not “life-threatening”. In fact, it would be interesting to hear the NHS' stance on the subject. It should be in the interests of the government to educate people on our natural, normal desires, however diverse they should be, and how to be as safe as possible while practicing sex in whatever way one chooses to, not by censoring some people's only access to sex education. And yes, pornography is sometimes the only sex education young people have. Learning that consensual sexual activities are all acceptable and okay to talk about, practice and watch is much more important than demonising those activities.

Sexual preferences should never be censored where they are consensual and safe, and I can personally attest to the fact that all those listed above are both, as long as the participants are well-informed of any potential (although not life-threatening!) risks they might involve.

It would only be right, in a moral, non judgemental and accepting society, for these new regulations to be scrapped. They should never have come into force in the first place. Censorship and oppression are never the answer.
