Tougher sentences for those found guilty of mistreating animals.

Tougher sentences for those found guilty of mistreating animals.

The Issue

We the undersigned petition the government to change the law regarding the punishment of those found guilty of mistreating animals. We would like to see sentences which reflect the severity of the crime and justice for animals such as Chunky.

The teenagers who committed this crime were given a referral order, told to pay costs and banned from keeping animals for five years. Given that animals feel pain and fear in the same way that humans do and that the majority of people convicted of violent crimes, started by injuring animals I think that the punishment should be jail. A ban from keeping animals is useful in many cases, but in this case the dog had been stolen and this should also have been considered when passing sentence.

We would like the government to change the law to allow for tougher sentences for those found guilty of mistreating animals.
