On the 10th of March 2021, members of the South African Police System shot rubber bullets at students protesting for their right to fair education at Wits University. Mthokozisi Ntumba who was visiting a clinic at the time of the protests was killed in the process. Students and members of the EFF then moved to have the street currently known as De Beer Street changed to Ntumba Street to honor his life. This event is part of a long standing history of violence by institutions and the state against black students and this name change would be at least a symbolic acknowledgment of students’ demands.
