Cut VAT to 10% for Hair, Beauty & Nail Services – Support Mental Health & Small Businesses

"The Voice of Hair, Beauty & Nail Services"
We are Women Inspire Women! a movement born from the chairs of real salons, the voices of everyday professionals, and the stories of clients who see our work as more than a service but a lifeline.
After the pandemic, we heard the same heartbreaking words from so many women:
“This is the only place I go. But I can’t afford it anymore.”
Our industry is about more than hair, beauty, or nails.
We provide care, connection, and confidence for women battling depression, isolation, or simply trying to feel human again.
Yet salons like ours are barely surviving. VAT at 20% is devastating small businesses, especially in this labour-intensive industry, where reclaiming costs isn’t possible like in other sectors.
This is not just personal.
It’s National !
The hair and beauty sector contributes over £5.5 billion a year to the UK economy, supporting nearly 300,000 jobs most of them held by women.
But we are taxed like we’re selling luxuries not essential services that uphold mental health, dignity, and local communities.
We are not asking the government to lose money.
We’re offering a solution to save and grow a sector in crisis.
According to the latest reports:
A reduced VAT rate on labour won’t cost the Treasury a penny
It could generate economic growth, restore VAT registrations, and reverse the damaging shift to disguised self-employment
£2.4 billion in VAT has already been lost since 2009 from this shift
Ireland listened. They dropped VAT to 9%—and saw:
New salons opening
Better worker protections
Increased tax revenue
With the right support, the UK can do the same. Our industry can: Rebuild apprenticeships
~ Create fair, sustainable jobs
~ Reduce strain on NHS mental health services
~ Bring clients back into safe, supportive spaces
This petition isn’t just from one voice it’s from all of us.
From every stylist, every salon owner, every beauty therapist, and every woman who knows the value of self-care.
We’re not asking for luxury.
We’re asking for Fairness. for Recognition, for a Future.
