The Issue
As a member of the swim team at Concordia University Irvine, I have experienced firsthand the incredible bond and dedication we have fostered over this semester. The swim team's presence has transformed the atmosphere at our university, creating a vibrant and engaging community. The decision to cut our program along with the tennis team is not just disheartening but feels like a cowardly and easy escape for the administration rather than addressing the broader issues or considering other extracurriculars.
Our swim team is more than just a sports program; it embodies hard work, determination, and unity. Students have poured their time and effort, often balancing rigorous academic schedules with intense training sessions, all for the love of the sport and the sense of community it brings. Our presence uplifts the morale of the campus, provides an outlet for passion and discipline, and shapes individuals who go on to make positive impacts in the wider society.
Silent cuts to these athletic programs are not just about removing a sport. They strip away opportunities for student-athletes to grow and thrive. Moreover, they undermine the diversity of experiences that Concordia University Irvine claims to offer. Athletics contributes not only to a well-rounded education but also to building school spirit and alumni pride.
We urge the university administration to reconsider their decision and prioritize transparency and communication with students and faculty. It is crucial to provide open forums for discussions and explore alternatives before dissolving entire programs that benefit the campus community as a whole.
Firing the current athletic board is a necessary step. This leadership change will help ensure that their decisions align more closely with the values and needs of the students they serve. We call for new leadership that understands the importance of athletics in enriching the student experience and the university's legacy.
We need your support to bring about this change. Please join us in demanding accountability from Concordia University Irvine and safeguarding the future of our athletic programs by signing this petition.
