Please email the note below right now as the public hearing is tomorrow - feel free to customize - email to: boulderplanningboard@bouldercolorado.gov; council@bouldercolorado.gov; meadowlarkopenspace@gmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hon. Boulder Planning Board Member, Please recommend that City Council act quickly to implement flood protection at the proposed Meadowlark Open Space (CU South) using the Upstream and Variant 1 Options. This is the safest option for downstream Boulder neighborhoods that were devastated by the 2013 flood. New CU apartments should not be more important than the lives of Boulder citizens. Variant 2 and allowing CU to fill in wetlands in the NW corner of the property maximizes buildable land for CU but threatens the lives and homes of many Boulder communities including Frazier Meadows. Variant 2 was rejected by the Open Space Board of Trustees as it threatens to cover with sludge an adjacent state protected natural area featuring some of Colorado’s most important wet-meadow habitat along with endangered wildlife species. Two large cottonwood trees wedged in the flow restricted Variant 2 drainage is all it would take for massive downstream flooding of Boulder to occur. The cost effective Upstream and Variant 1 option will provide the highest amount of flood water detention and highest level of safety for Boulder Communities and protect a natural area of critical importance. This option will also allow the NW corner wetlands to help hold back flood waters which will further ensure the safety of Boulder communities.
