With the other viruses that the government has released this year and those other viruses that seem to have simply escaped from places unknown, Myxomatosis still remains one of the biggest killers of not just the wild rabbits but our domestic rabbits too. Too many vets think that myxomatosis is a thing of the past, and how wrong they are. The past summer myxomatosis deaths are proof that myxomatosis is still rife in our country and always will be. Once a virus is released it will always be there the only difference is that viruses mutate, and once that happens who knows what these new strains bring. Just like the flu in humans there is a different strain every year. We are losing our pet rabbits most of whom are “house bunnies” and live inside with us just like cats and dogs do. They have litter trays the same as cats and the only thing difference is bunny’s litter trays don’t smell like a cat’s does. Children have lost their pets and many of them don’t understand why I have always said that if your pets were cats or dogs and there was no vaccine to prevent them from catching infectious diseases or a sudden outbreak of diseases that hadn’t been seen for a number of years there would be a public outcry to the government and not just from cat & dog pet owners either. At the moment Feline Panteukopenia and Parvovirus in dogs are killing cats & dogs in Australia. But these pet owners are so lucky because there is a vaccine to protect both cats and dogs from both of those diseases. Rabbit owners are not so lucky though because there is no myxomatosis vaccine in Australia. Why…No 1 because our government will not allow the vaccine into Australia and they won’t produce a vaccine of our own either. Why…No 2 because the Australian government want every rabbit in Australia to be a dead rabbit including domestic rabbits. That includes meat rabbits and our pet rabbits During the summer of 2016 - 2017 thousands of rabbits died because of the terrible myxomatosis virus, and every time it rears up it seems to have mutated in to an even stronger virus. This summer myxomatosis was killing rabbits in a different way though. Some rabbits were fine first thing in the morning and by days end they were dead. The only real outcome for a rabbit with Myxomatosis is death. Would you take your pet to be euthanised now, or try and spend some lasting time with him? What a difficult decision to make, and this past summer hundreds of pet bunny owners have had to make that decision. There are owners who have lost all their pet bunnies to myxomatosis. There are meat breeders who have lost part of or their entire stock. We appreciate that the wild rabbits can do an enormous amount of damage to our environment and crops but so do other animals and not just the wild animals either.
