Clearly, anyone familiar with Kaufman s work will know that the idyll with Lisa was never going to last, and the spectacular public meltdown that seals its conclusion is weirdly shattering. Anomalisa is a beautiful exploration of that terminal lassitude. And now the pic is headed for a prestigious screening at TIFF. Bella lives in Cincinnati. He begins sending complaint letters to a vending machine company that soon spiral into a series of letters that reveal startling personal admissions. Anybody except Lisa, that is. Her voice (Jennifer Jason Leigh’s) cuts through the din and forces Michael out of his room to find its source. Where the film had seemed almost listless in its opening act, something clicks when Lisa enters the picture. For some reason (likely budget, though it could also be justified by the film’s self-conscious nature), the directors opted not to erase the joints in post, leaving a conspicuous seam running across the puppets’ faces at all times. We all love the nostalgia of that style, but this isn’t Ray Harryhausen’s Medusa. Using only the voices of three actors (David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tom Noonan) and a host of dolls, Kaufman and co-director Duke Johnson bring to life a world of chatty cabbies, convention-hall ennui, absurdist humor, explicitly detailed hot puppet-on-puppet action and a bone-deep level of sadness. or gaze out the window to find a man masturbating in the office park across the way? Among the variety of films that will be playing at the fest are Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion animated pic Anomalisa and director Jean-Marc Valle’s (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club) drama Demolition, and the first images for both films have been released online as a result. And not only does everyone save Michael and Lisa sound the same, they look the same, too. The project was originally envisioned as a 40 minute short, but after a successful crowdfunding campaign, it was extended to a feature length experience.
