The Issue

I have become increasingly concerned about the improper disposal of lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries. It alarms me to think about the risks these items pose to our community, from exploding or sparking fires in trash disposal areas to causing health hazards due to the toxic fumes released when they do catch fire.

Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries are omnipresent in our lives today, found in mobile phones, laptops, children's toys, and disposable electronics like vapes. These conveniences have made our lives easier, but they come with a hidden danger when not disposed of correctly. Throwing them in the garbage can lead to fires which release toxic gasses and pose significant dangers to those who handle and come into contact with them inadvertently.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association indicate that improperly discarded batteries have been linked to numerous waste facility fires around the country. These are dangerous not only to the workers in these facilities but also to nearby communities. As these batteries become more common, so does the need for proper disposal methods.

Currently, the lack of publicly-accessible disposal sites means that many community members resort to throwing these dangerous items in the trash. This is a problem that's only going to get worse as technology continues to advance and battery-operated devices proliferate.

By establishing publicly-funded battery disposal sites, we can create a dedicated place for community members to safely dispose of their unwanted batteries. Not only would this safeguard our environment and workers, but it would also protect our families from the potential dangers of toxic fires and hazardous materials.

I urge lawmakers and community leaders globally to recognize the importance of safely managing battery disposal and to take action by establishing these necessary facilities. Let's make our communities safer and more sustainable for everyone, especially our children.

Please sign this petition to push for laws that require the creation and funding of these vital battery disposal sites. Together, we can make a difference and protect our community for future generations. Let's act now to protect our communities.
