Create Policy against the use of AI Art at Pottsgrove School District.
The Issue
The students at Pottsgrove High School are sick and tired of seeing AI art be used throughout the district.
We have a high ranking art program in Montgomery County, with many different mediums of art classes, as well as talented students who would gladly offer their help for anything the school needs. The use of AI art has no creativity to it, it lacks any real character and has no authenticity.
The creative process is one of the most important parts of creating art. Using AI generated art completely disconnects you from that process, and can lead to little or no human collaboration.
Pottsgrove has had multiple run ins with AI art in the past few months. When at the middle school last May, students came across a poster saying that they should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day. When taking a closer look, it is evident the individual facts on the poster were a jumbled mess of letters and non existent words. Is this truly what we want for our school? AI art is seen as extremely unprofessional and lazy, which are not traits our school upholds. These posters were up next to every single water fountain around the middle school and all of them were unreadable.
A recent poster has been put up around the for The Academic Team. This poster is all around the school, even blown up to 3 ft in some places, and has an AI generated image of Einstein in the "Uncle Sam" pose with the text, Top: I WANT YOU, Bottom: TO JOIN THE ACADEMIC TEAM. This poster is very clearly AI generated. The fact that this poster was approved by the school to be plastered all over our walls is disappointing and extremely disrespectful to the hard working students of our art program.
Pottsgrove School District needs to set a policy against using AI art under any circumstances. The creativity of students should be cherished and encouraged by the school, allowing the use of AI art for students and staff alike should be extremely discouraged as it can be harmful to the value of art education and promotes laziness. It is also known to be extremely harmful to our environment, which is not something we want to promote. Pottsgrove should be encouraging students to use their knowledge and creativity whenever possible, and allowing AI art contradicts that extensively.
Here are a few articles about why AI art negatively impacts the world and art as a whole.
