Create job opportunities and financial security for future generations
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the future of younger generations. As they leave education, many young people find themselves saddled with overwhelming student loan debt. They enter an increasingly competitive and saturated job market, where secure and stable employment feels like a distant dream. Without access to steady income, the goal of independent living becomes elusive, and the struggle to get onto the property ladder is a source of immense stress. This climate of uncertainty is eroding the mental health and well-being of our youth, who deserve a fair chance to build prosperous and stable lives.
I propose a vision for a brighter, more sustainable future that addresses these pressing issues head-on with concrete solutions. Firstly, by making retirement at the age of 66 compulsory for civil servants so we can create a more dynamic job market that offers more opportunities for younger workers. This policy could facilitate the natural cycle of employment and work to stimulate job creation, benefiting both employers and younger job seekers.
Secondly, the abolition of inheritance tax would allow families to pass down their hard-earned assets without the heavy burden of additional taxation. This change could significantly ease financial pressures by allowing young individuals to use family resources to build their futures, whether by starting businesses, purchasing homes, or investing in education, in turn revitalising our economy through increased spending and investment.
Finally, abolishing leasehold ownership can provide greater security and peace of mind for homeowners, encouraging young people to enter the property market without fear of forfeiting control over their homes. This transition to a more equitable system of homeownership is key to ensuring that the new generation can access housing that is truly theirs.
We owe it to our youth to provide a landscape where they can not only survive but thrive. My proposals aim to foster an environment of support and opportunity, enabling young people to focus on their dreams and aspirations without the debilitating weight of financial insecurity.
