Create animal ambulances!
The Issue
Recently a road injured deer was shot in the head and killed by OPP after Refuge RR, a vegan farm sanctuary, did not know of any wildlife veterinarians in the area. A brave citizen waited 2 hours for support, but the refuge called police thinking they would help. The fact that the deer survived that long means they had a strong will to live, despite a broken leg and a head injury.
We need Ontario to change laws to allow farm veterinarians, exotic veterinarians, and pet veterinarians to treat wildlife too. Refuge RR mentioned a shortage of wildlife veterinarians in the comments as one reason police arrived.
We would like there to be 24/7 animal paramedics that can provide a non violent response to animals who are injured. Animal paramedics could be a new licensed category in Ontario. In 2016, York Region Police decided to stop shooting wildlife and asked the city to have a non violent rescue. We would like police to no longer use shooting as a response to animal calls. The animals do not always die right away. https://animaljustice.ca/blog/police-deer-killing
There also need to be more wildlife rehabilitation centres. The closest wildlife centre was 3 hours drive away. Ontario used to have over 200 rehabilitation centres, now they only have about 50 due to overly strict regulations. We would like the rules changed to allow more wildlife rehabilitation centres, and to allow places like Refuge RR to take in wildlife.
