Here's why this petition is of utmost importance:
- Housing Shortage: We do not create enough homes to satisfy new demand. Our housing crisis means demand is set to outstrip supply for years. Our construction industry is not keeping up.
- Affordability Challenge: Home prices have fallen, yet at the same time buying a home has become more unaffordable. Rising mortgage rates are increasing how much income we need to buy a home even as prices weaken in most markets. What does that mean? Surging rental demand.
- Financial Instability: As of the end of October 2023, over half of those polled with a mortgage expressed that they would be unable to make a payment within three months if they lost their job. Furthermore, 16 percent said they would fall behind on payments within just 30 days.
For the past few years, rent prices have been skyrocketing by over 11% annually, despite declining home prices. Astonishingly, the vacancy rate for purpose-built rental apartments has dropped to its lowest point in the last two decades.
The key issue here is SUPPLY!
