Create a Safe, Inclusive Outdoor Space for Roller Skaters in Sydney
The issue
We are skaters. We roll for joy, freedom, fitness, and connection. But in Sydney, we’ve been left without a safe, dedicated space to do what we love. We come from all walks of life, but skating brings us together.
Sydney’s roller skating community is rapidly growing – yet there is no dedicated outdoor rink for us to safely skate, connect, and move. The majority of skaters in Sydney are adults aged 25–54, with over 81% identifying as female. A large portion of the community also identifies as LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, or from culturally diverse backgrounds. Skating is more than a sport – it’s self-expression, joy, fitness, and freedom. But without a safe, purpose-built outdoor space, we are forced to skate in carparks, footpaths, or basketball courts – environments that are unsafe, poorly maintained, and often unwelcoming. Many skaters report being excluded or harassed in male-dominated skateparks, which are structurally unsuitable for roller skates and don’t welcome the flow and rhythm of roller skating or blading.
If nothing changes, we risk neglecting a movement that supports mental health, physical wellbeing, and community connection - especially for adults who don’t feel represented in traditional team sports or gym culture. Skating is one of the few female-majority recreation activities, and it offers a low-cost, low-barrier entry to exercise for people of all ages. Global cities like Barcelona, New York, and London already support roller rinks as vibrant cultural hubs. Sydney has the opportunity to do the same.
More than 91% of surveyed skaters support a dedicated outdoor rink in Sydney. 64.7% would use it at least three times per week, making it one of the most actively used recreational facilities per square metre. With under-utilised and other council-managed spaces under consideration, the opportunity to act is immediate and tangible.
Let’s build a space that reflects the diverse, vibrant, and active people of Sydney. Sign this petition to call on the City of Sydney to support an inclusive, outdoor roller rink now.
