The Issue

Every day, residents of Wentworth Point use The Promenade to access Marina Square, public transport, Sydney Olympic Park, Rhodes, and the foreshore walkway. However, at the connection between The Promenade and Foreshore Place, the footpath abruptly ends, forcing people to walk across grass and navigate an uneven kerb to continue their journey. For some members of our community, this means they are unable to access the route at all.

While this may be a minor inconvenience for some, it creates a significant barrier for many members of our community, including people using wheelchairs, mobility aids, prams, bicycles, and older residents; and it therefore does not align with the principles of equal access and inclusion reflected in disability discrimination and accessibility legislation. Additionally, during wet weather, the grass becomes muddy and slippery, making the area even more difficult and unsafe to navigate for everyone.

As a local occupational therapist, I have seen first-hand how important accessible environments are for participation, independence, and community inclusion. I have also personally supported wheelchair users in Wentworth Point who have been unable to access this route because their wheelchairs could not safely traverse the grass or kerb.

This issue has been raised with the responsible parties and has been discussed within the community for some time. While future works have been proposed, no clear details or timeline have been provided. As a result, there is still no continuous pedestrian connection between these two pathways, and the issue remains unresolved several years after the surrounding road and pathway network was developed.

We are calling for the construction of a safe, accessible, and permanent footpath connection between The Promenade and Foreshore Street/Place so that all residents and visitors can move through our community safely, independently, and with dignity.

Please support this cause by signing and sharing this petition. Together, we can help create a safer, more accessible, and more inclusive Wentworth Point for everyone.
