The Issue

The Supreme Court is preparing to hear a case that could determine whether cities and states can pursue lawsuits against oil companies for climate-related damages. At the center of the case is a Colorado lawsuit seeking accountability for the costs of extreme heat, wildfires, and other climate impacts allegedly linked to fossil fuel production and marketing.

Regardless of how the Court rules, one thing is clear: the United States lacks a coherent national framework to address climate-related harm and corporate transparency.

Right now, communities are turning to the courts because Congress has not created a clear federal path for addressing climate damages. The result is a patchwork of lawsuits across the country, inconsistent legal standards, and prolonged uncertainty for cities, businesses, and taxpayers alike.

Instead of leaving this issue to fragmented litigation, Congress should act.

We call on the U.S. Congress to establish a national climate damages and corporate transparency framework that:

  • Requires fossil fuel companies to publicly disclose climate-related risks tied to production, marketing, and long-term environmental impact
  • Establishes uniform federal standards for addressing climate-related economic damages
  • Creates a structured compensation mechanism for communities facing verified climate impacts
  • Prevents a confusing, state-by-state patchwork of inconsistent rulings

Transparency protects consumers. Clear national standards protect businesses and communities alike. And a federal framework ensures that climate accountability is addressed consistently rather than piecemeal.

Climate change crosses state lines. Its economic impacts do too. The response should be national, not improvised through scattered court battles.

This is not about punishing one industry through unpredictable litigation. It is about creating clear rules of the road, ensuring accurate public information, and building a predictable system for addressing climate-related costs.

Sign this petition to urge Congress to create a national climate transparency and accountability framework that protects communities, promotes consistency, and replaces legal chaos with clear policy.
