Every year, thousands of children go missing in the United States. While the AMBER Alert system is essential, it is only used in the most severe abduction cases. Many missing children do not meet the criteria for an AMBER Alert right away—yet those first hours are often the most critical.

We are calling for the creation of a “Missing Child Alert” system to bridge this gap.

This system should:

Alert the public when a child is missing and may be at risk
Be used in cases that do not yet qualify for an AMBER Alert
Be targeted locally to reach the right communities quickly
In addition, this alert should have a unique and recognizable sound that is different from existing emergency alerts. This will:

Immediately signal that a child is missing
Capture attention without causing unnecessary panic
Reduce alert fatigue and improve public response
A simple change like this could increase awareness, speed up response times, and ultimately help bring more children home safely.
