Yesterday, several people were contacted regarding the North Main Rotary Park. Of the four people contacted two have currently responded. One of these is Will Young, Interim Director of the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. Unfortunately Mr. Young made it clear he does not believe that the park should be opened to dogs. He then recommended the Connestee Park Dog Park which is over twenty minutes from the North Main Area. While this park may be wonderful for residents of the Connestee area, unfortunately, it is too far for most residents of North Main to bring their dogs on a daily basis. North Main being such a dog-populated area deserves a closer place to bring their dogs to play, and Rotary Park is a great option. While Mr. Young's response is a setback, we will not stop fighting for a place for the dogs of downtown to get the exercise they so desperately need. Not all news is unfortunate, however. District 1 representative John DeWorken has informed me that he is open to discussing the issue further with me. While I was unable to gauge his position on the field, due to the briefness of the interaction, I am hopeful that his history of community involvement and support of neighborhood issues may mean that he may support our cause. We have also reached out to Mayor Knox White and Parks and Grounds Administrator Staci Schafer, though neither have currently responded. I would like to thank you all for your continued support, and please continue to share and promote our petition. We have done so much so far, but we are just getting started.
