In the last 4 years or so, the traffic issue in Courtenay has become increasingly bad. Since the renovations of the 5th street bridge have limited traffic flow to one lane only, the 17th street bridge has become more congested. Additionally, rapid population growth in the Comox Valley has led to more traffic on our roads. With only 2 practical bridges to cross the Puntledge River (besides the Condensory Bridge), improvements need to be made to increase traffic flow across the river. 

Eventually, a new bridge will need to be built to accommodate more traffic.

However, a relatively simple, cost-effective, and quick-to-build solution is to create a short additional right-turn lane on 17th street immediately after the bridge on the South side of the river. This would create a dedicated right-turn lane onto Cliff Avenue directly after the bridge. It would not require widening the bridge or changing any of the current traffic routes. It would allow the 2 dedicated right-turn lanes to continue to exist, convert the current straight-through and right-turn lane into a dedicated straight-through lane, and create the dedicated right-turn lane.

Please sign this petition, and hopefully, the mayor of Courtenay and those in charge of city planning will implement this change. It is a feasible and necessary improvement to our city.
