Mi Nei Martins started this petition to County of Kauai and

Protect our keiki, ʻohana, ʻāina, wai, kai and mea ʻai.

Let the County of Kauaʻi and State of Hawaiʻi know that spraying POISON all over our island is UNACCEPTABLE! Everyday these harmful chemicals are being sprayed in our neighborhoods, in our parks, sports fields, roadways, near schools, streams and beaches with NO WARNING, NO SIGNS and no mandated limitations around application.

The active ingredient of the poison being sprayed is called Glyphosate!

Glyphosate may well be the most toxic chemical ever approved for commercial use. Results show devastating effects on humans, the soil, the water, forests, eco and marine systems and all life forms. It destroys the micro biome of humans and plants, which is the root cause of many modern diseases. The short term effects are frequent respiratory illnesses. But the long term effects are deeper, such as neurological disorders and cancer. It is now linked to kidney disease, antibiotic resistant bacteria, inflammatory bowel disease, depression, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, cachexia, infertility, and developmental malformations.

Glyphosate exposure damages and reduces the population of many animals, including beneficial insects, fish, birds, and earthworms. The use of glyphosate is said to have long term effects on the environment, such as reducing natural fertility of the soil. Issues such as this decrease the overall sustainability of farming and agriculture in the long run.

Monsanto, the maker of these deadly herbicides, recently lost three court cases that resulted in a California jury awarding billions of dollars to each of the individuals after concluding their exposure to Roundup and Ranger Pro led to their cancer diagnoses and non-Hodgekinʻs lymphoma. Monsanto lost because glyphosate is a known carcinogen.

All around the world, countries are starting to ban these chemicals. My home town on the east side of Kauaʻi (Wailua-Kapaʻa-Anahola) is heavily sprayed. For the past 10 months I have called in complaints and concerns to the County of Kauaʻi Department of Parks and Recreation, State of Hawaiʻi Highways Division, and the Mayorʻs office. Sadly, no changes have been made to the spraying in our town. Most recently I sent a letter to Kauaʻi Councilwomen Felicia Cowden and she forwarded my concerns to the County of Kauaʻi Department of Parks and Recreation and the State of Hawaiʻi Highways Division asking for an investigation on this matter. A response was requested, however both Directors did not respond.

Mahalo nui loa to Hawaiʻi Superintendent Christina Kishimoto, whom just last week sent a memo to all principals stressing that herbicides are now BANNED at Hawaiʻi public schools!

Please sign and share this petition to help protect our island as well as our State and County workers who are required to spray these poisons but are not forced to use protective gear.
