Testimony Needed Fri May 17 9am. Council Chambers
The injection well case is only one of many, where Corporation Counsel has vastly overstepped their authority by withholding settlement offers from the council.
Their abuse of authority is unacceptable.
Pat Wong is not the only lawyer responsible for these acts. Moana Luety is doing the same exact thing currently by withholding a settlement agreement offered to the county from Chris Salem over the faulty decision to not enforce outstanding SMA permit violations in West Maui.
The county IS at fault and should be held accountable to make the issue right. Yet in order to protect themselves and their agenda Moana Luety and Brian Billberry abuse their authority.
There needs to be a house cleaning at Corporation Counsel. Pat Wong's departure is just the start, many more staff there are conflicted and we need to assert ourselves to have them removed.

The County of Maui has spent millions of dollars litigating in order to release processed wastewater into the ocean through the Lahaina Injection Wells without a permit. They have lost four times in the courts and are now going to the Supreme Court.
A "win" there would gut the Clean Water Act and allow polluters everywhere to dump waste into the ocean as long as they do it indirectly. The wastewater carries nitrogen, phosphorous and other nutrients into the ocean where they stimulate algae growth and damage the coral reefs.
However, the Council will now consider withdrawing from and settling the case. The settlement offer that the Council will consider was inappropriately withheld by Corporation Counsel.
Settle the case, stop polluting the ocean!
