Councilwoman Julie Won: We Need A Stoplight at Jackson & 46th Ave NOW

The Issue

Every day, hundreds of people cross Jackson Ave at 46th Ave (in front of 5Pointz) without the protection of a stoplight.

It's a matter of time before someone is killed at this intersection.

Since January 1st, 2020 there have been:

  • 76 car accidents
  • 10 pedestrian injuries
  • 5 cyclist injuries

In the 1000ft of Jackson Ave stretching from 21st St. to 23rd St.

Councilwoman Julie Won: If you care about the safety of your constituents, you must publicly commit to getting a stoplight installed at this intersection ASAP.

Background:

I reached out to Councilwoman Won’s office eighteen months ago, explaining the urgent need for a stoplight at the intersection of Jackson Ave & 46th Ave.

I have not received any communication from her office since September 2024 regarding this issue.

No substantial information or commitments have been communicated by her team since 2023, beyond stating that they’re tracking a DoT traffic study from 2021.

In my initial email, I sent a video showing twelve dangerous maneuvers or crossings at the intersection within an 8 minute period.

Using NYC’s Open Data Portal, I was able to create a custom Google Maps view showing the 76 car accidents on the stretch Jackson Ave:

Councilwoman Won: This cannot wait any longer. Fifteen people have been injured by cars at this intersection in five years. The problem is getting worse, not better. I invite you to observe the intersection for an hour in the afternoon. I would be happy to host and provide additional context for why pedestrians choose to cross at this location.

Long Island City residents: Please share this petition and reach out to Councilwoman Won’s office to express your support.
