Turn Up The Volume on City Hall #roaddiets

Tired of the business killing "Road Diets"? Want to do something about it? I have some exciting news. Things are shifting at City Hall with regard to the road diets (planned and implemented) all over the city. Our efforts so far are having an impact at City Hall. Now we’d like to turn up the volume with a city-wide letter-writing campaign. Vision Zero is Mayor Garcetti's baby, and he’s turned a deaf ear to the problems the road diets are causing. He doesn’t seem to care about what longer commutes and failing businesses mean in real terms to every day people. However, he does care about his political aspirations. Let’s let him know we can’t support someone who is so cut off from the realities of our lives and how his decisions affect us. Please EMAIL/CALL MAYOR GARCETTI and the Cc: the officials listed below today and let him know what his road diets have done to you (e.g., I got written up and my job is now in danger, I have to pay $XX more for a sitter and I don’t know where the money is coming from, I missed a very important doctor’s appointment, I couldn’t get home to my sick kid, I got trapped in an emergency, the stress sent me to the hospital…) Let him know it’s not just time that he’s stealing from your life (longer commutes) but that all that extra time in traffic is having painful consequences he may not have considered. Here's a letter you can crib from: Mayor Garcetti, Road diets are bad for L.A. They’re killing local businesses and damaging communities. They're pushing traffic off of the arterials and onto neighborhood streets. They're slowing emergency response, and making commutes nearly impossible. And yet you think these lane removals should be rolled out all over L.A. You haven’t figured out how to provide decent transit alternatives, yet you think people should just give up driving? That’s not leadership. That’s not vision. [Add anecdotes about how a road diet has affected you, personally, here] Please, return the lanes now, and use common sense and good design principles to make the roads safer and more efficient for the people who rely on them and PAID for them. In your eagerness to push cars off of the road, you’ve forgotten the PEOPLE inside those cars. You’ve forgotten that we still have to get to our jobs and back home to our families. You’ve forgotten that we vote. Sincerely, [Name and neighborhood] SEND TO: L.A.
