Retain 2017 Bond Funding for North New Braunfels Ave.

The Issue

N. New Braunfels Ave. is a major street for residents of the east side of San Antonio, including Dignowity Hill, Harvard Place / Eastlawn, Denver Heights, Government Hill, and many more. In recent years, it has earned a reputation of being a home for violence, drug dealing and prostitution. It is also the last major arterial road in the city to have outdated lighting. Recent efforts from neighbors, governmental and nonprofit organizations, and businesses have begun to reverse this. In addition, the recent improvements in Dignowity Hill and Eastlawn, as well as the newly-opened East Meadows apartment facility have brought new life to the area, and have primed this major arterial road for redevelopment and improvement.

There is currently $9 million designated for the redevelopment of N. New Braunfels from Burleson St. to E. Houston St. These improvements would include improving outdated utility infrastructure, create new parking for local businesses, address concerns of public safety, upgrade the lighting, and redevelop the area to prime it for capital investment and improvement.

On November 29 at the Streets, Sidewalks & Bridges Bond Committee, a recommendation was made to reallocate $2 million to a project recommended by Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston to construct a road out of an existing gate near Seguin Rd. and Jack White Park. While board members were presented with this petition and a statement from the Dignowity Hill Neighborhood Association, no commentary was made on it.
