Thank you for signing the petition in support of European directors and screenwriters, every signatory counts! This week, performers, audiovisual authors’ and their representative organisations came together in the European Parliament to explain to politicians the reality of creators in Europe, and that most of them are not remunerated when their works are used via on-demand services such as Netflix. The event was hosted by three Members of the European Parliament from different political groups: Marc Joulaud (EPP, France), Mary Honeyball (S&D, United Kingdom) and Helga Trüpel (Greens/EFA, Germany). Two weeks ago, SAA published a summary of an international legal study together with the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and Writers & Directors Worldwide (W&DW). The study is the first-ever comprehensive examination of legislation that support fair payment to audiovisual authors. The study provides evidence that unwaivable rights to remuneration are an efficient legal tool to ensure remuneration to audiovisual authors for the exploitation of their works and that it is working where it already exists, for example in Spain and Chile. These are some of our efforts to continue putting pressure on European politicians ahead of the vote in the European Parliament on the new Copyright Directive on 21st June. We need to show decision-makers that we are numerous calling for improving the situation of screenwriters and directors. The petition has reached more than 16.400 signatories from around the world, but we want more - for this we need your final active support! What can you do? 1.
