I am a resident of the apartment complex Meridian West in Key West, FL, where the management has consistently failed to maintain the property and treat its residents with respect. For months now, we have been living without functioning elevators, causing lots of distress to our disabled residents. The manager has shown little concern for cleanliness or the functionality of our homes. Essential appliances like air conditioners are left broken for months before being replaced. Especially over summer months. 

 

Discrimination is rampant here. Non-English speakers and disabled individuals are treated unfairly by management. Residents with medical conditions do not get their needs met, not to mention this is a violation of the Fair Housing Act. Since 2020, we have been denied access to common areas and paid amenities that were promised to us when signing the lease. 

The security measures promised are non-existent; gates and lights have not been working or broken for months, leaving us feeling unsafe in our own homes. Residents have had to buy their own staircase lights. The manager creates hostile environments by spreading rumors about residents. The complex feels like an unhealthy and toxic relationship. 

The apartment list process is a mystery, and there is no transparency when it should be a public domain document. You cannot go to the company's superior bosses because the manager will not provide information about her supervisors.

My personal experience includes being targeted with defamed rumors spread by the manager among other residents. My father had electrical issues in his apartment that forced him out of his home for a month at his own expense. I was almost denied applying because my background check came back that I only had a traffic violation, but other residents have had multiple arrests and convictions. 

This is not just about my family's struggle but represents the experiences of many others living here who face similar issues daily due to poor management practices, and many spanish speakers who don’t know how to advocate for themselves. Everyone should be treated equally. Living in Key West is not cheap and we should not be treated like this when some work very hard to be here.

We need your help to bring about change! We demand better living conditions, fair treatment from management, proper maintenance of facilities including elevators and AC units, an end to discrimination against non-English speaking and disabled individuals, restoration of access to common areas and paid amenities as well as functional security measures like gates and lights.

Soy residente del complejo de apartamentos Meridian West en Key West, FL, donde la administración constantemente no ha mantenido la propiedad ni ha tratado a sus residentes con respeto. Desde hace meses vivimos sin ascensores que funcionen, lo que causa mucha angustia a nuestros residentes discapacitados. El administrador ha mostrado poca preocupación por la limpieza o la funcionalidad de nuestras viviendas. Los electrodomésticos esenciales, como los aires acondicionados, se dejan rotos durante meses antes de ser reemplazados. Especialmente durante los meses de verano.

Aquí la discriminación es rampante. Las personas que no hablan inglés y las personas discapacitadas reciben un trato injusto por parte de la gerencia. Los residentes con condiciones médicas no satisfacen sus necesidades, sin mencionar que esto es una violación de la Ley de Vivienda Justa. Desde 2020, se nos ha negado el acceso a áreas comunes y servicios pagos que nos prometieron al firmar el contrato de arrendamiento.

Las medidas de seguridad prometidas son inexistentes; Las puertas y las luces no funcionan o están rotas desde hace meses, lo que nos hace sentir inseguros en nuestros propios hogares. Los residentes han tenido que comprar sus propias luces para las escaleras. El administrador crea ambientes hostiles al difundir rumores sobre los residentes. El complejo se siente como una relación tóxica y enfermiza.

El proceso de escalafón de los apartamentos es un misterio, y no hay transparencia cuando debe de ser un documento de dominio público. No se puede acudir a los jefes superiores de la empresa porque la manager no proporciona la información de sus supervisores. 

Mi experiencia personal incluye haber sido objeto de rumores difamatorios difundidos por el administrador entre otros residentes. Mi padre tuvo problemas eléctricos en su apartamento que lo obligaron a salir de su casa durante un mes por su propia cuenta. Casi me niegan la solicitud porque mi verificación de antecedentes reveló que solo tenía una infracción de tránsito, pero otros residentes han tenido múltiples arrestos y condenas.

Esto no se trata solo de la lucha de mi familia, sino que representa las experiencias de muchas otras personas que viven aquí y que enfrentan problemas similares a diario debido a malas prácticas de gestión, y de muchos hispanohablantes que no saben cómo defenderse por sí mismos. Todos deberían ser tratados por igual. La vida en cayo hueso no es barata y no nos deben de tratar así cuando unos trabajan bien duro. 

¡Necesitamos tu ayuda para lograr el cambio! Exigimos mejores condiciones de vida, un trato justo por parte de la administración, un mantenimiento adecuado de las instalaciones, incluidos ascensores y unidades de aire acondicionado, el fin de la discriminación contra las personas discapacitadas y que no hablan inglés, la restauración del acceso a las áreas comunes y servicios pagos, así como medidas de seguridad funcionales como portones y luces.
