The Issue

On September 15th and 17th, 2006, fans of television networks The WB and the United Paramount Network (UPN) bid farewell to a cherished era in broadcasting as these networks ceased to exist, merging into The CW on September 18th, 2006. For many, this merger symbolized the end of a beloved chapter of television that had brought a unique blend of programming and cultural diversity to our screens. It signified the loss of distinct identities that once resonated with millions. The recent passing of Jamie Kellner, the founder of The WB, on June 21, 2024, adds a poignant note to this historical narrative, as we remember his contributions to the television industry and mourn the loss of a visionary.

In 2022, Nexstar Media Group acquired The CW, a move that opened new avenues for potential restructuring in the entertainment landscape. This juncture presents an opportunity to revisit the merger decision and potentially restore The WB and UPN to their original glory, allowing these networks to once again flourish independently. Such a move could breathe new life into creative content, satisfy nostalgic cravings, and deliver programming that serves diverse audiences.

The WB was known for its innovative series that often gravitated toward teen and family-oriented dramas, while UPN carved a niche for itself with a mix of urban sitcoms and drama series, appealing to a broad demographic. Re-establishing these networks would not only honor the legacy of Jamie Kellner and the unique place The WB and UPN held in television history but also offer current and future audiences a richer variety of content.

Some stations will add the rest.

The WB (as a revived broadcast network) will be owned by the Warner Bros. Television Group division of Warner Bros. Discovery and Nexstar Media Group, and UPN (as a revived network) will be owned by the CBS Entertainment Group division of Paramount Skydance Corporation.

The CW will still be owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Skydance, and Nexstar Media Group, and MyNetworkTV will still be owned by the Fox Television Stations division of Fox Corporation.

Through reviving The WB (with The CW's 2024 Rebrand and Graphics) and UPN (with Paramount Network's 2018 Rebrand and Graphics), but keeping The CW (by bringing back it's previous logo) and Fox's MyNetworkTV, financial and creative investments can focus on niche market segments, tapping into the nostalgia of past audiences and the curiosity of new ones. This restructuring could enhance viewer engagement and loyalty, driving both viewer ratings and advertising revenue streams.

The time is ripe for Paramount Skydance, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Nexstar Media Group to consider the historical significance and future potential of reviving The WB and UPN. By doing so, these media giants can show a commitment to diverse programming and community engagement, fostering stronger connections with viewers of all ages.

We urge all stakeholders and decision-makers to reflect on this opportunity to honor the legacy of The WB and UPN while crafting a balanced, engaging television future. Please join me in signing this petition to advocate for the return of The WB and UPN, and let’s make television history together!

To take further action, please email and tell them directly that we demand to know the progress made toward this commitment.
