Construct a Pedestrian Bridge over the South Platte River for Safe Access

The Issue

Example pedestrian crossing

I am a resident of Roxborough Park, and like many others in my community, I enjoy spending time at Waterton Canyon and Chatfield State Park. However, accessing these beautiful locations can be hazardous due to the lack of safe crossing over the South Platte River. The narrow shoulder on the existing bridge leaves little room for error, posing a significant risk to pedestrians and cyclists alike. With increasing traffic in our area, this danger has only escalated.

The construction of a pedestrian bridge near Waterton Canyon would not only ensure safer access for residents of Roxborough Park and Sterling Ranch but also alleviate parking congestion at Chatfield, Waterton Canyon, and along the roadway during peak weekends and holidays. This proposal is not just about convenience; it's about safety.

According to data from Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), traffic in this area has increased by 20% in the last five years alone. This increase not only exacerbates safety concerns but also highlights the urgent need for action.  Also, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities account for 17% of all traffic deaths nationwide - an alarming statistic that underscores our urgent need for safer infrastructure.

By signing this petition, you are supporting safer access to outdoor recreational spaces in our community while promoting pedestrian safety overall. Please join us in urging local authorities to construct a pedestrian bridge over the South Platte River near Waterton Canyon – because everyone deserves safe access to Colorado's natural beauty.
