Dear Ridgewood Community,

We have a significant and ever-growing community of dogs and their owners here in Ridgewood, Queens, NY. Every morning from 7-9am, regardless of the weather conditions, we gather at Grover Cleveland Park. We share this public space with great respect for each other, our pets, and the countless Ridgewood residents who recreate the park alongside us.

While dogs are allowed off leash in the park before 9am and after 9pm, we need a safe, fenced in area that can be used by dogs throughout the day to keep our pets and other park goers safe. There have been many instances of dogs running away due to fear, anxiety, or overstimulation. A dedicated dog run within the park would provide a safe environment for them to play without fear of getting lost or running into traffic.

We believe that having a dedicated dog run will not only benefit us as pet owners, but also contribute positively towards maintaining cleanliness and orderliness to others in the Ridgewood community.

Benefits to Other Park Users:

  • It would allow park patrons who might be afraid or allergic to dogs, or parents with small children, to use the park without worrying about an off leash dog approaching them.
  • It would allow space for dedicated pet waste removal.
  • It would allow cyclists/skaters/bladers/scooters to operate without dog traffic.
  • It would help park sanitation workers be able to work safely without dogs getting in their way. It is unsafe for them to drive their trucks within the park while unleashed dogs are running around.

Benefits to Dogs and Dog Owners:

  • It would ensure our dogs safety and freedom in a controlled environment.
  • It would provide a dedicated community space to continue to grow as a dog parent network, improving our ability to connect and share resources.
  • It would provide a space for dog owners with alternative work schedules, that cannot make it to the park before 9 AM or after 9 PM.
  • It would keep our pets safe from consuming dangerous trash or stepping on broken glass.
  • It would keep the other sections of the park safe for dog walkers whose pets do not do well around other dogs.

Therefore, we urge local authorities to consider constructing a dedicated dog run at Grover Cleveland Park. This initiative would undoubtedly enhance quality of life for dogs, their owners, and our fellow Ridgewood residents who rely on this coveted access to green space.
