The Issue

To our neighbours in Langford, Metchosin, and Colwood - we need your help.

Many of you work, visit, and spend time in Sooke  - in healthcare, the trades, offices, schools, and retail. And in turn, many residents from Port Renfrew, Shirley, Sooke, East Sooke, Langford, and Metchosin work, play, and support businesses in your communities.

You’ve seen firsthand how serious the traffic has become. Highway 14 urgently needs thoughtful, forward-looking planning - whether that means an alternate route or another  solution.

Right now, the situation is unsustainable and without action, the future will be even worse.

Please stand with us. Sign the petition and share it with others who care about access, safety, and smart planning for our entire region.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request your immediate attention to the urgent issue of *traffic gridlock traffic congestion between Langford/Sooke, Sooke/Langford - Colwood, Metchosin, East Sooke - negatively affecting our community in Sooke, BC.(*slight change in wording from original petition)

Impact on Commuters: Commuters are facing extended travel times, which has cut into valuable time they spend with their families and negatively impacts their overall quality of life. Financially, increased traffic congestion has caused higher vehicle maintenance and fuel costs due to prolonged idling and frequent stop-and-go conditions. Additionally, commuters have faced late fees for daycare services and missed appointment fees. The stress from long commutes has decreased productivity and increased absenteeism , risking job security and income stability. These financial pressures not only strain individual families but also reduce disposable income, which is negatively impacting the local economy. Immediate action is needed to address these wide-ranging issues.

Impact on local businesses: Traffic congestion has caused economic losses and frustrated clients for local businesses. Lower sales, and delivery delays increase costs. Customer frustration has caused lost repeat business and negative reviews, damaging reputations. Tourists are deterred by traffic congestion resulting in lost revenue for tourism operators retail, restaurants, and hotels. Service-based businesses have had challenges meeting appointments, leading to cancellations and revenue loss. Increased fuel and maintenance costs for business vehicles has added to expenses. The cumulative financial burden not only affects individual businesses but also impacts the broader local economy, reducing tax contributions and affecting public services. Addressing traffic congestion immediately is essential to support local businesses and enhance the community's economic health and quality of life.

Environmental Toll: The environmental toll of traffic congestion is severe, as prolonged idling increases pollution, impacting residents' health and that of the environment. Air Pollution: Idling and stop-and-go traffic has worsened air quality and has caused respiratory issues for some residents and the issues of the extreme traffic congestion experienced by residents can lead cardiovascular diseases. Water Pollution: Traffic-related pollutants are wash into local Sooke rivers, streams, and storm drains, contaminating water bodies, harming aquatic life, and disrupting ecosystems. This poses health risks to residents and wildlife. Impact on Wildlife: Pollution and noise is disrupting animal behaviour and habitats, and fragmenting wildlife territories. Contribution to Climate Change: Emissions from idling vehicles trap heat in the atmosphere, raising global temperatures and increasing the severity of extreme weather events.

Addressing traffic congestion now is essential to improve air and water quality, protect wildlife, and preserve our natural beauty. Immediate action is needed for a sustainable and healthy future for our community.

Current *Gridlock & Congestion Impacts Emergency Service, Disaster Response: Emergency Response Delays: Traffic congestion *increases (*changed from reduces) response times for fire, ambulance, and police services, which can mean the difference between life and death. Delays in reaching fire scenes allow fires to spread, causing more damage and casualties. Health Emergencies: Delayed ambulance response can worsen medical emergencies like heart attacks and strokes, potentially leading to fatalities. Disaster Response: During large-scale disasters, congested roads hinder evacuation efforts and the delivery of aid, increasing casualty rates and suffering. Fire Services: Traffic delays prevent fire trucks from reaching fires quickly, allowing them to grow larger and more destructive. Police and Security: Congestion delays police response to emergencies, accidents, and crimes, compromising public safety. Vulnerability: In an emergency, the current congestion will cause chaos, making evacuations difficult and leaving residents in high-risk areas longer.

Improving infrastructure and traffic management now is essential to ensure prompt emergency response, safeguarding lives of residents and responders alike, reducing injuries, and minimizing property damage.

The Solution:
We believe that only through immediate united action and a collective voice can we prompt the necessary immediate response from the government. By signing this petition, you join a community of concerned citizens and business owners demanding immediate and effective solutions to our traffic woes.

Call to Action:
Please sign this petition and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Our goal is to ensure that the government takes immediate and concrete steps to address the current traffic congestion, commit to near and future plans, and respond quicker to the needs of the community.

In 2023, all levels of government acknowledged the importance of addressing highway congestion with statements related to upgrades on Highway 14. However, while these improvements are essential, they are not sufficient. The ongoing congestion illustrates the urgent and immediate need for comprehensive infrastructure development that matches the pace of both mandated and organic population growth.

The current pace of improvements is not acceptable. All hands must be on deck to solve the current transportation corridor crisis and expand existing plans. We need to speed up additional near, mid, and future plans to reduce community vulnerability on all levels.

Together, we can ensure that our voices are heard and that effective solutions are implemented. Let's come together as one community to demand better infrastructure and a better future for all.
