Today we are celebrating the two-year birthday of our Stop Sham Investigations petition. We launched this petition on March 18, 2019, exposing the deplorable investigation of Matt Rolph, former student at Hobart and Smith College who was accused of non-consensual sexual conduct. His case went to trial in December 2014 and he was acquitted by a jury.
At first, we focused on sham investigations on college campuses. But then we broadened our scope to guilt-presuming victim-centered, trauma-informed, and Start by Believing investigations in the criminal justice system, as well.
We should not underestimate the nefarious designs of the Due Process Deniers, who are working for a radical transformation of sexual assault and domestic violence laws:
- Expanding definitions of offenses so virtually everyone is guilty
- Changing long-accepted legal requirements for mens rea
- Slanting the whole investigative process
We like to think of this petition as the beginning of broad-based movement to restore fairness in our legal system.
As of today, 4,576 persons have signed the petition. So how can you help? By sharing this petition on Twitter, Facebook, and by emailing it to your friends.
Can we get to 4,700 signers by tomorrow?
Sincerely,
Edward Bartlett
