Two weeks ago we reported on the deceptive and unethical interrogation methods used on 16-year-old Huwe Burton -- pictured above. The National Registry of Exonerations reports:

  • The police brought Burton in for questioning on January 5. They interrogated him for three hours. Twice, he asked to speak to his father, who was out of the country. Those requests were denied. They told him he was lying about when he was at school....Burton would produce a written and videotaped confession in which he said he was high on crack cocaine and had killed his mother during a fight.

In a recent news video, Burton recounts how the exoneration "took a weight off me and....gave me more strength to fight."

The video reveals the tactics used to coerce the false confession "were neither new or illegal." Under the Reid technique, the "interrogation is an accusatory process, in which the investigator tells the suspect that the results of the investigation clearly indicate that they did commit the crime in question."

So when will police officials, lawmakers, and the public begin to demand an end to the use of the coercive and deceptive Reid technique?
