George Orwell was the famed political commentator who understood how words often are manipulated for political purposes. One of his most memorable quotes immortalized the word, "doublethink." Orwell wrote:

"Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them."

Let's take the word, "unbiased," for example. Proponents of victim-centered methods often claim they want to have "unbiased" investigations. But the opposite is true. Victim-centered methods:

1. Negate the presumption of innocence
2. Refer to the complainant with the conclusory word, "victim."
3. Seek to bias the collection of evidence and the wording of the investigative report: Make sure the incident does “not look like a consensual sexual experience” and by making the complainant “appear more innocent,” according to Start By Believing.
4. Interpret inconsistent and contradictory statements as proof that the "victim" was "traumatized."

But victim-centered ideologues don't seem to realize -- or will never admit -- that such methods serve to bias the process. That's the seductive power of doublethink.
