Congress Should Have the Same Healthcare and Retirement Benefits as Every American

Congress Should Have the Same Healthcare and Retirement Benefits as Every American
The Issue
We, the undersigned, believe that members of Congress should not receive healthcare and retirement benefits that exceed those of the Americans they were elected to represent.
Today, lawmakers are granted lifetime pensions, subsidized healthcare into retirement, and exclusive options unavailable to millions of working families. Meanwhile, everyday Americans must navigate the complexities of Medicare, Medicaid, and market-based 401(k) retirement plans, often with uncertainty, gaps, or high out-of-pocket costs.
We believe:
- That public service is a privilege, not a pass to lifelong benefits.
- That those who legislate our healthcare and retirement systems should also experience them firsthand.
- That equalizing benefits would improve accountability and build urgency for reform.
- That trimming excessive entitlements at the top is an important step toward fiscal responsibility.
Therefore, we call on Congress to:
1. Participate only in Medicare, Medicaid, or Affordable Care Act exchanges, with no special subsidies.
2. Receive retirement benefits through 401(k)-style plans, eliminating lifetime pension guarantees.
3. End exclusive perks and programs not accessible to ordinary Americans.
Let public service truly serve the public.
Let Congress live by the same rules, same systems, and same struggles.
Equal benefits for equal service.
Sincerely,
Michelle Adams
